WHO reappoints Regional Director for Africa

On the occasion of its 146th session in Geneva, Switzerland, the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) has re-elected Dr. Matshidiso Moeti for a second term as the organization's Regional Director for Africa. Originally from Botswana, Dr. Moeti was the first woman elected to this position in February 2015. In her acceptance speech for her re-election, she was quick to point out that "Africa is increasingly confronted with the double burden of disease" and as such "the next five years in public health will be crucial in laying the solid foundations to reverse this burden."

Despite major health problems in the 47-country African region, progress is being made in strengthening health systems, combating disease and improving people's health. Recent efforts by member states include tobacco control policies, vaccines against cervical cancer and malaria prevention, and joint initiatives to purchase affordable medicines.

Composed of 34 members, elected for a three-year term, the Board sets the agenda for the next Health Assembly. The Board's main functions are to implement the decisions and directives of the Health Assembly, to consult with it and, in general, to facilitate its work.
