Who are the candidates for the post of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO)?

Egypt: Hamid Mamdouh, 67, also of Swiss nationality, a lawyer by training, has over 35 years' experience as a negotiator and then as a senior official at the WTO. Since leaving the institution, he has joined a Geneva law firm specializing in trade issues. He was part of a list of three people validated by the African Union for the elections due to take place in 2021.

Kenya: Amina Mohamed, 58, member of the Nairobi Bar, WTO expert whose three most important bodies she chaired when she was ambassador to the UN and WTO in Geneva (2000-2006). A former Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, she headed Kenyan diplomacy until 2018. An unsuccessful candidate in the 2013 WTO leadership election, she is currently Minister of Sport, Heritage and Culture.

Nigeria Okonjo-Iweala, 66, World Bank official for 25 years, former Minister of Finance (2002-2006 & 2011-2015). She regularly appears in rankings of the world's most influential people. She currently chairs GAVI, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization. She also leads one of WHO's programs to combat COVID-19.

Moldova: Tudor Ulianovschi, 37, former ambassador to, among others, the UN in Geneva and the WTO (2016-2018), former Minister of Foreign Affairs (2018-2019), is no stranger to the trade organization.

United Kingdom: Liam Fox, 58, a GP by training, member of the Conservative Party and the British Parliament, is former Secretary of State for Trade (2016 to 2019).

Republic of Korea Yoo Myung-hee, 53, a member of the New York Bar since 2003, has 25 years' experience as a trade negotiator, particularly in bilateral free trade agreements. She is currently South Korea's Minister of Commerce and the first woman to hold the post.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Maziad al-Tuwaijri, an Air Force pilot by training, after a long career as a banker, was Minister of Economy and Planning (2016-2020). Since March 2020, he has held the position of Minister-Consultant on Economic Strategy to the Royal Saudi Court.

Mexico Jesus Seade Kuri, 76, also of Lebanese nationality, has extensive experience of international organizations (World Bank, International Monetary Fund, WTO), and was chief negotiator for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the USA, Canada and Mexico. A former Deputy Director-General of the WTO, he also held academic positions for 10 years (China & Hong Kong). His career has also regularly enabled him to collaborate with numerous African countries. Since December 1, 2018, he has held the position of Secretary of State for North America at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE).
