UN chief in China

UN Secretary-General António Guterres was in Beijing on April 8 on an official visit to China, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Antonio Guterres congratulated President Xi on his recent re-election and thanked him for his support for the work of the United Nations. "The UN continues to count on China's leadership and commitment to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including through international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative," he added.

During the meeting, the Secretary-General also welcomed China's "consistent and constructive advocacy of a diplomatic solution to the situation on the Korean peninsula". He underlined the commitment of the UN system to help support "a process of sincere dialogue, leading to lasting peace and denuclearization on the Korean peninsula".

During his few-day visit, Antonio Guterres will also meet other Chinese government officials. He will also visit a training center for police deployed in peace operations. The Secretary-General will travel to Boao, on the island of Hainan, to take part in the 2018 edition of the Boao Forum for Asia (April 8 to 11), whose theme is "An open and innovative Asia for a more prosperous world."
